What’s next after Anwar al-Awlaki?

Anwar al-Awlaki Pictures, Images and Photos Yesterday the U.S killed very wanted terrorist, Anwar al-Awlaki in a drone strike in Yemen. He was probably in their top 3 of terrorists they would like to kill. He had a hand in multiple terrorist attacks and/or attempted terrorist attacks against the U.S. and declared war on them, even though he was born in New Mexico. Now that this terrorist is dead, the question becomes, what now for the U.S. in their quest to destroy Al-Qaeda?

The obvious answer is to kill the new head of Al-Qaeda which is Ayman al-Zawahiri. The next would be to get Taliban leader Mullah Omar. However, both of these targets will not be easy to hit and will likely take time. In the mean time, I expect the U.S. to continue their drone strikes in places such as Pakistan and Yemen. In addition, I expect these drone strikes to expand to Somalia. This is a lawless country where a terrorist group controls parts of it and it is currently a safe haven for Al-Qaeda. This will be the new operating field for U.S. drones.

The killing of these top terrorist figures like Bin Laden and now al-Awlaki, combined with the Arab Spring that we witnessed earlier this year which came from people protesting for democracy puts a serious strain not only on Al-Qaeda, but on the whole concept of terror that groups like Al-Qaeda promote. Although the Arab Spring is not going that well anymore in places like Egypt (where it was won, but now seems bad) and Syria (where it is still far from being won), the terrorist ideology seems weaker than ever and at this pace it will eventually go the way of the dinosaur. Until then however, look for Somalia to soon become a news maker for receiving drone strikes.
