U.S. halts financial aid to Pakistan

Since the U.S. killed Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan without their approval, some people have said that the U.S. should stop giving Pakistan the $2 billion it gives them every year in financial aid. ┬áSome of the aid is for military assistance since Pakistan is a so-called “ally” against terrorism. It appears that the U.S. has been looking for a good excuse to stop some of that financial aid and recently Pakistan gave them just that. Pakistan has been expelling U.S. officials and has reduced the number of U.S. military personnel there, which makes it more difficult for the U.S. to find terrorist networks there and in Afghanistan. This gave the U.S. a good reason to withhold $800 million that was destined for Pakistan.

All this a dangerous game. Pakistan has nuclear weapons and have likely sold some of that know how to North Korea and Iran. In addition, they play an important role in the Afghan war since they share a strategic border and harbour some of those terrorist groups. It would be better if the U.S. and Pakistan had strong, trusting relations but that simply is not the case. In fact, this is probably the lowest point the two countries’ relations have been. It is unclear if things will continue to deteriorate or if Pakistan will adjust their stance and actually work with the U.S. Right now it seems like this is not likely.

I wish I had some good idea to suggest that would improve things there but, at this point I can’t say that I do. I guess we will see how this story unfolds.
