The future of the Middle East

With the possibility of big changes on the horizon in Egypt, the entire Middle East may end up looking different in the not too distant future. Although we may not hear too much about Egypt every day on the news until about a week ago or so, it is a crucial country in the region and in the world. The future of Egypt will have a big impact on the future of the Middle East and the world.

So why is Egypt so important? For starters, it’s the largest Arab country with almost 85 million people. It also has the strongest military from all the Arab countries. It shares an important border with Israel and was the first of two countries to sign a peace treaty with them. This might be the most important point here. From all the countries in the Middle East, only Egypt and Jordan have a peace agreement with Israel (Turkey doesn’t, but they also did not wage war with them in modern times). If the new Egypt (once they have a new leader) decides to no longer honour their peace treaty with Israel then the Middle East and the world will become a much scarier place.

On the other hand, if the new Egypt becomes more free, remains secular and relatively pro West then this can make the Middle East and the world a safer and better place. If the new Egyptian government will honour its peace treaty with Israel and has the support of the people, then this will inspire other Arab countries to do the same. It may create momentum for a more secular and democratic Middle East and this can have a very positive impact on the region and the world.

It is very interesting to see which way Egypt will go. Regardless of how this story resolves itself, Egypt will remain one of the most important countries in the Middle East. For this reason, the story dominating the news for the past week is worth following.
