Positives from a hurricane?

Hurricane Earl is approaching the eastern coast of the U.S. and then Canada and will likely hit very soon. It is unclear exactly how much damage it will cause but many areas have already declared a state of emergency as they brace for the worst. Declaring a state of emergency is a government formality which allows those areas to obtain needed resources quicker and with far less bureaucracy than usual.

Hurricanes cause a lot of devastation to property and can even kill people. However, there is very little that people can do at this point in our advancement to change the path of a hurricane. Therefore, the best thing to do is first, prepare for it so the damage will be as little as possible. After that, the next best thing to do is to try to find some positives in it. Luckily, there are some. Property that is destroyed by hurricanes needs to be rebuilt and repaired. This means that businesses will have work to do. Much of the costs will be shouldered by insurance companies so innocent people will not pay too much out of pocket.

This sudden demand caused by storm damage will act like a mini stimulus in those regions. As long as the damage is not as severe as Katrina was in New Orleans the affected areas will recover fairly quickly. Aside from the irreplaceable items that hold sentimental value for people, most other possessions will be repurchased at local businesses. This increased economic activity could serve as a shot in the arm of those businesses which will then see a need to hire more staff. Then you will have more employed people that now have money to spend.

This alone will not turn around a stalling economy, but it might help more than it hurts. The key is to always look for positives in situations that have deep negatives like a hurricane. This will make things easier to deal with and can actually create the thinking needed to find opportunities.
