Only three real Republican candidates

There are a lot of Republicans that are either thinking about joining the list of candidates to try and unseat President Obama or have already thrown their hat in to the ring. Recently, the person that has been garnering the most attention has been Newt Gingrich. However, I don’t see him as having a serious chance to win the Republican nomination. The way I see it right now, there are only three potential candidates that have a shot at winning the Republican nomination and have a chance to beat Obama (which will not be easy at all).

Those three people are: Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty and Jon Huntsman. There is the off chance that someone will enter the race that has not been discussed at all, but it will most likely be one of these three men. If I had to predict a winner between them then I would have to go with Mitt Romney, but that mostly has to do with the other two men being completely unknown to most voters. The other reason that Romney has an advantage is because the Republican Party is known for choosing the person who is ‘owed’ theĀ privilege. In other words, because Romney finished second to John McCain in the last Republican race, the party feels like it’s his ‘turn’ at it now. Ridiculous, I know. This is an example of why the Republican Party is anĀ ageing institution.

With that said, I still wouldn’t count out Pawlenty or Huntsman. It is too early to tell if either of these two have an ability to connect with the masses. If either of them does then they can beat Romney. Although Romney is the early favourite, it isn’t because he is that well liked. It is more because of the weakness of the other well known candidates that gives him the edge. This is the same reason that led to McCain winning the Republican nomination last time which resulted in a trampling by Obama.

So for anyone that is trying to make sense of the potential Republican candidates, forget about fools like Gingrich, Palin and others. You really only need to look at Romney, Pawlenty and Huntsman because it will most likely be one of these three that will challenge Obama in 2012.
