Movie review: X-Men First Class

X-Men: First Class Pictures, Images and Photos I am a fan of super hero films. Therefore, I am a little biased and more lenient when it comes to critiquing them. With that said, I did not like the previous X-Men movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It was a little boring and did not compare to the first three. The new X-Men film which opened this weekend is actually a prequel as it shows how the X-Men team was formed, as well as, the main villain, Magneto. X-Men: First Class was good and definitely better than the previous X-Men movie.

Without spoiling the movie for you, much of the plot is set during the time of the Cuban missile crisis. It tries to infuse the X-Men right in to history by pitting their story in the middle of the U.S./ USSR stand off that took place during that time. It even shows clips from President Kennedy’s speech from that time. Although I liked how they tied some actual history into the story, they seemed to show some U.S. military decisions being made by Generals instead of the President which was not very believable.

Besides that however, I couldn’t find too many big flaws with this movie. Some parts in the beginning and middle did not have that much action and that could have been made a little more entertaining. Regardless, I would recommend watching it. As with all super hero movies, if you do decide to watch it then you should do it in theatres instead of downloading it or waiting for the DVD. The special effects are worth paying the price of admission to watch it on the big screen. I hope the next X-Men film will be even better and hopefully the previous one was just a one-off and not a sign of the things to come from this franchise.
