Big winner from 2011 UN General Assembly

Every year the countries of the world gather at the UN headquarters in New York City. The leaders of each country gives a speech to the world about anything they wish. Hot topics often include tensions between certain countries, wars, famine, etc… Over the last few years, an important topic has been discussed a lot at the UN General Assembly by many countries as it is a serious threat to the advanced world. That topic is Iran and that country’s dictators trying to build a nuclear bomb.

This year however, Iran was spared the lion’s share of attention at the UN General Assembly. Instead, the global economy was discussed and even more attention-getting was the President of the Palestinian territories, Mahmoud Abbas and his request for official recognition of Palestine as a state. This call went against what most of the Western world wants because it makes it even more difficult to actually achieve peace and thus, an official Palestinian country. Regardless, major world leaders and media attention was focused on this issue instead of pressuring Iran to give up its nuclear ambitions.

Iran is clearly the happiest country at the UN General Assembly this year. For the first time in several years, they are allowed to quietly keep building a nuclear weapon while the world discusses other matters. Instead of convincing Russia and China to make serious sanctions on Iran, the Western world is busy trying to avoid another flare up in violence between the Palestinians and Israel.

It is an unfortunate turn of events for the world that just when more pressure needs to be placed on the awful Iranian dictators, just the opposite is occurring. Hopefully, the world will once again focus its attention to a real global threat before it’s too late.
